Vegan MoFo! Day 30: Tent in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

I had quite the debaucherous and unproductive weekend, so I’m trying to catch up on my final Vegan MoFo posts today before MoFo is officially (sadly) over. Part of the debauchery was my sudden inability to cook for myself and insisting that we eat out. My October eat-in challenge kind of fell apart. And I proved a point to myself because when I ate out, eat I did. After dinner out on Friday night, I felt like I was going to explode from a higher oil and white bread intake than I’ve had in ages. I hope I taught myself a lesson (besides needing to patronize a new restaurant near my house more often) - I hope I learned to order and eat a little less when I’m out for dinner.

We went out to a new restaurant near our house called Tent. It’s on Nassau Ave in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, right in this new buzzing area of delicious restaurants in the neighborhood. Tent is a Lebanese restaurant with a very different vibe than the cool hipster restaurants it’s right near by. It’s huge and has harsh-looking tile floors and fluorescent lights. But it’s got a certain je ne sais quoi that we both found really charming. And even though there didn’t seem to be any vegetarian main dishes, their huge starter menu was filled with delicious veggie fare. I over-ordered, to say the least.

This is a really really bad camera phone picture, but those plates are filled with fuul medamas, Lebanese stuffed grape leaves, stuffed pickled baby eggplant, a red pepper and walnut dip, falafel, stewed okra, zaatar bread (my favorite) and pita bread. Tent is also BYOB, so we brought a bottle of red wine with our dinner. Everything was good, some things better than others, but it was also incredibly cheap. It cost us $30 to order enough food for four people. I think once we learn our way around the menu a little more and we order a bit more reasonably, it’d be well under $20 for a really good dinner. We will definitely go back here. I also think it’d be a good place to go with friends, so if any of my local friends read this, want to go sometime?

Until then, I need to keep drinking dandelion tea and eating raw veggies to pay penance for the over-indulgence of this past weekend.
